Army Corps of Engineers

I have applied to an IT Project Management position with the ACOE. Well, the best I could. The grammer wuz badd. Not very professional, but I am exaggerating a bit. Actually, there was just some issues with punctuation that made the form requirements section confusing.

So, this is #3. The position "may or may not be" located in Omaha, Portland, Los Angeles, and somewhere out East. I'm cool with the first three choices and obviously not interested in the fourth.

The pay range for this job is $68,809.00 to $99,636.00 / Per Year, so it would be real cool to land it!

I will report back in when I have heard back from the ACOE.

Gallup

I attended, via RSVP, a small recruiting event at Gallup in Omaha recently. After seeking out a couple of the technical project managers, I felt like I would fit in quickly at Gallup. Now I will post portions of email correspondence with Gallup:

24 FEB 2012 - Technical Project Manager-01442 at Gallup (email)
"Dear Joseph,

Gallup has received your application for the position of Technical Project Manager and we are currently reviewing your experience and qualifications.
Most candidates receive communication regarding their status within one week after their application. However, because of the competitive nature of the role, and Gallup's thorough review process, it could take up to four weeks for us to contact you regarding your candidacy...

...If your profile corresponds to Gallup's requirements, a member of our Talent Resources Department will contact you to schedule the next step in the process, an in-depth telephone interview. If a fit is not indicated, you will receive notification via email. We value your time and efforts and recognize the importance of promptly communicating with candidates."

08 MAR 2012 -

I spent 45 mins answering questions to a prefabricated list for my "first" interview by phone. I was often cut short when answering the questions and a portion of them were so vague that I had to say how I interpreted them and then answer my interpretation. I felt really good after the interview, even though the person asking the questions was probably being paid $10 an hour to do a repetitive job and had no clue about most of what I was talking about.

The interview was recorded and I was told that it would be reviewed and that I should get a response in one or two days via email. If selected to continue in the interview process, I would have another phone interview and if that went well, then an in-person interview. (I live 10 minutes away from Gallup)

12 MAR 2012 -Technical Project Manager-Gallup (email)

"Dear Joseph,
Thank you for your interest in careers with The Gallup Organization. We appreciate the time you spent completing our application process and in-depth telephone interview.
Our goal is to find the best fit between a person's talents and strengths and the company's needs. We believe this approach provides individuals with the greatest opportunities for personal and professional growth. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have an available role* that would take full advantage of your strengths. Therefore, we cannot further pursue your candidacy.
Although we do not provide assessment feedback, your confidential application information will remain in our candidate system's talent bank. We will contact you if an appropriate opportunity does arise.
Again, thank you for your time and application.
We wish you the best in your endeavors.

*Apparently, between the Subject of the email and rejecting me, the "Talent Resources Group" forgot what job I applied for.

Union Pacific

In the fall of 2011, I applied and interviewed with a manager/recruiter for Union Pacific (UP). The interview went great. We were both on the same page.

G.I. Jobs
magazine has been recognizing UP for years in regards to their commitment to hiring veterans. Just two years ago UP was at the top in hiring veterans. Today, they are not even in the top 25.

They are ranked 28th and by the way I was cut in the first round, despite being fully capable to do the job, Information Assurance, I am predicting that the company will continue to lose favor with the veteran community.

Union Pacific's page about veterans tout their support by hiring veterans. Maybe they do so in "blue collar" jobs, but my experience with the "white collar" side at the headquarters in Omaha is starkly different.

Initial Post

After applying to over 50 jobs during the course of four months and either not receiving a response or getting minimal attention...I have decided to start recording what company I am applying to, the position, and their "policy" about hiring disabled veterans.

I am a disabled veteran.
